O'Neil auditioned for the third season of Canadian Idol in the early part of 2005, when she was still a high school student. Judges loved her voice and she was able to advance to the Top 100 round. O'Neil was given high praise by the judges but suffered significant losses in the Top 10 weeks as well as the Top 9 of the Finals in which she was relegated into the lowest 3 and 2 spots and bottom 2 respectively. The judges were shocked by the results and instructed the crowd to vote for contestants like Melissa O'Neil, who had the strongest singing skills. O'Neil's performances were so good that she was never in the third place ever again. O'Neil's two further performances of September 7, 2005, when O'Neil made it to the top two spots in the contest. Werner said that in the morning, papers would cover O'Neil's win over Rex Goudie as she became the third Canadian Idol and first female champion. O'Neil was promptly congratulated by Canadian Prime Minister Paul Martin for winning Canadian Idol.
